Description

An attractive hardy terrestrial orchid with reddish orange/copper coloured flowers. This Helleborine is great for the garden, easy to grow and will gradually spread if happy. Distinctive orange flowers appear in the summer above lush green foliage growing 30 to 45cms high. Epipactis gigantea originates from North America and prefers moist soils in partial shade in a cool location. I grow mine in terracotta bowls (see photo) but also in semi shade spots in the garden.

Instead of a tuber, Epipactis gigantea have rather thin, stick-like rhizomes, which forms branches with large numbers of long roots, from which one or several dormant buds form. These dormant buds give rise to the new stems in Spring, so that a mature plant can form an impressive clump of flower spikes.

Plant into good compost or garden soil that retains some moisture throughout the year approx 5cm below the surface ensuring that the white growing tips are pointing upwards but are covered. Epipactis gigantea can multiply quite quickly in suitable conditions. If you intend to grow in a pot, it is best to re-pot and thin out during October and November each year once the flower spikes have died down.

Supplied bare-root (see photos) with at least one growing tip in a small amount of vermiculite wrapped in newspaper to keep the roots moist during transit. Also available, larger bare roots with two or more growing tips – see here.

Care Instructions
