Places to see Butterflies
Finding Our Elusive Butterfly Species
A personal guide to important sites in Britain by Steven Cheshire and Debbie Hibbitt.
The following places listed below are home to some of our more 'difficult' butterflies, from the rarest, to the most inaccessible. The list also includes some of my personal favourite butterfly sites accompanied by personal notes.
Take some common sense and manners with you on your visit!!
The most important thing about visiting any of these places to see butterflies and other wildlife is to use a little bit of basic common sense and manners.

1. When visiting these important places, take nothing but photos (and memories), leave nothing but footprints. Take your rubbish home!!!
2. Report to the correct authorities anyone who appears to be collecting rare species of butterfly without an official licence.
3. Don't barge in paparazzi style when taking photographs. Use some manners and try not to be rude to other fellow wildlife enthusiasts.
4. Try to keep to the paths where possible, avoid trampling in areas critical to wildlife such as wild flowers, larval food plants etc.
5. Don't let you dog foul these sites. However, at some sites (e.g. where Purple Emperor's are found), dog poo is butterfly food and may be encouraged!!
