and welcome to British Butterflies
Butterflies and Moths are key indicators of the state of the natural world because of their short life-spans and complex lifecycles. In Britain, detailed records spanning over 40 years of observations show a steep decline in the numbers of almost all of our butterflies. These declines are due to human activity resulting in habitat loss and in some cases, species extinction.

I hope, that by browsing my web site, you will be inspired to join the fight to save our butterflies before its too late.

£25m project to reverse decline in butterfly species
Sir David Attenborough marked the start of construction on Butterfly World, a world-class pioneering project, with a stark conservation warning:

“More than three quarters of British butterfly species have declined in the last 20 years, some of them very rapidly. That is worrying, not least because these declines indicate an underlying deterioration of the environment as a whole. For the sake of future generations we must take action now... more

The threats to butterflies in modern Britain
Modern Britain is becoming an increasingly hostile place to live for our butterflies. Our hedgerows, road verges and those fragmented wild places which still survive the bulldozer are full of litter. The human population of this small island continues to grow at an unsustainable rate resulting un uncontrolled urban development and increased demands on our natural resources.

Recent changes in European Union policy combined with increasing demands for bio fuels in an attempt to 'go green' has caused grain prices to increase. The need for grain and bio fuel means that the EU has cut farming subsidies paid to farmers for 'set aside'. This loss of 'set aside' is already having a massive impact on our butterflies and other wildlife.

Until the European Union and the British Government employ joined-up thinking to the wider issues which face our natural environment, there's no doubt that our butterflies and other wildlife face an uncertain future... more
